Description

The Propeller Nebula (Simeis 57, DWB-111 and DWB-119) is located near Gamma Cygnus in the northeast. Like many emission nebulae in the constellation Cygnus, Propeller is part of the giant Cygnus X molecular cloud, located approximately 4,600 light-years from the Solar System.
This object was first cataloged in the early 1950s by astronomers of the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory in Simeiz G.A. Shain and V.F. Gaza, as the 57th object in a catalog containing 306 HII areas.
The Propeller Nebula is often incorrectly called DWB 111, but DWB 111 identifies only the southern arm, while the northern one is designated DWB 119. A DWB catalog of 193 emission nebulae associated with the star-forming region Cygnus X was published by three astronomers, H.R. Dickel, H. Wendker and J. H. Biritz in 1969.
We know a little about the Propeller Nebula... This nebula emits mainly in Ha, a little in SII and weakly in OIII. The stars or other sources responsible for the ionization of the gas have yet to be identified. The mass of the cloud, according to scientists, is less than 50 solar masses. For more information about this region, you can see a modern review of the physics of Simeis 57: The peculiar nebula Simeis 57-I. Ionized gas and dust extinction, published in 2003. in Astronomy & Astrophysics [A&A vol. 398, pp. 1063–1071].

This photo is my first experience of shooting through a dual-band narrow-band filter (Antlia ALP-T Dual Band 5nm Ha&OIII) and a color camera. 270 frames of 300 seconds and 64 frames of 600 seconds were taken, for a total of 19.25 hours. This material was used to create the HOO image. For color (RGB) stars, I used 34 frames of 300 sec each, selecting frames with minimal FWHM.
